Spence is a Principal Environmental Geologist in our Boston office, leading teams and serving clients. For more than three decades, Spence has helped clients navigate environmental and regulatory challenges, focusing on due diligence, brownfields cleanup and redevelopment, contaminated site remediation, hydrogeology, and water resource investigations. As a Massachusetts Licensed Site Professional (LSP), he specializes in the state’s unique framework of environmental regulation involving the Massachusetts Contingency Plan (MCP).
Spence has built his career assisting clients across a wide range of industries, including transportation, utilities, manufacturing, chemical production, telecommunications, and defense. Known for a collaborative approach, Spence brings together teams, clients, and regulators to develop creative environmental solutions. Whether supporting redevelopment of legacy industrial properties, advancing critical infrastructure projects, or navigating evolving regulations, Spence values practical solutions that protect communities, promote environmental stewardship, and enable property reuse. When he isn’t serving his clients, Spence is working to better the environmental profession. He enjoys sharing his experiences and mentoring early-career professionals.
Spence is a licensed Professional Geologist in New Hampshire and Pennsylvania, a Licensed Site Professional in Massachusetts, and a Licensed Environmental Professional in Connecticut who has contributed to several high-profile private and public redevelopment and infrastructure projects across the Northeast and beyond. Highlights include support for the redevelopment of the former Fort Devens, the former South Weymouth Naval Air Station, and Toronto’s award-winning West Don Lands. He’s also provided leadership on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) investigations and technology evaluations. Earlier in his career, Spence led groundwater remediation and restoration efforts at the Massachusetts Military Reservation on Cape Cod, overseeing large-scale cleanup programs, innovative remediation technology testing, and coordination with regulatory agencies and community partners.
Outside of work, Spence enjoys renovating old houses and spending time with family on the beach, camping, hiking, skiing, pond-skating, and traveling.
