Expertise
Matthew is a staff geo-structural engineer in our Portland office, where he makes sure that what’s built above ground is properly supported below ground. He studies the soil and rock beneath a site and helps design support systems that keep structures stable and prevent sinking or shifting.
Matthew is known for his ability to communicate clearly and translate people’s needs into practical technical solutions. With a background in emergency response, construction, and technical support, he has had exposure to a wide range of environments that have helped shape his approach to engineering.
“My experience as a paramedic taught me to listen carefully, build trust quickly, and adapt my communication style to individuals from all backgrounds, often in high pressure situations,” he explains. “I now apply that same skill in my professional work, bridging the gap between clients, field teams, and technical stakeholders.”
Right down to the smallest details, Matthew has always been curious about how everything around him operates and has had a deep connection to the outdoors.
“During school, discovering geotechnical engineering was when it all clicked,” he says. “It combined my interest in understanding material behavior at a fundamental level with hands-on, outdoor work on real world projects. It felt like a natural fit.
As a civil engineering graduate from Portland State University, Matthew aims to obtain his Professional Engineer license and continue to take on greater technical responsibilities. Outside of work, he enjoys traveling with his family, camping, visiting amusement parks, and competing in RC car racing at the national level.
