On Saturday, the City of Mountlake Terrace, Washington, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to reopen Ballinger Park’s improved shoreline. With the only accessible shoreline in Mountlake Terrace, the park is popular with the community. The $1.5 million project renovated park amenities and replaced an aging wooden dock, used for both fishing and non-motorized boating, with a separate boat launch and 220-foot aluminum fishing pier.
A GeoEngineers team led by Senior Environmental Scientist Jason Stutes provided environmental services for the project as a subconsultant to PND Engineers, helping the city with project management, permitting, wetland delineation and riparian mitigation.
The team saved the client money by quickly pivoting from wood to aluminum as the material for the pier. Although wood is typically cheaper, a temporary spike in prices meant aluminum was the more economical—and more resilient —choice.
