Principal Environmental Scientist

Principals are technical experts in the environmental discipline who actively manage the company’s business groups and/or market the company’s services. As a Principal Environmental Scientist, you will be responsible for the timely, accurate, and profitable completion of projects. Principals have the authority to enter professional services contracts, and they set an example of technical excellence and leadership to clients. Principals are expected to exhibit strength in a combination of the responsibilities and attributes noted below. They are expected to be actively involved in professional organizations and in the communities in which the company does business.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Technical

  • Promotes safe work practices through adherence to task safety assessments, site safety plans, company and client safety procedures and guidelines, and taking immediate action when necessary to avoid and/or mitigate hazards.
  • Assumes final responsibility for technical accuracy and loss prevention for projects.
  • Assumes final responsibility for project completion in accordance with contractual agreements.
  • Serves as a senior technical expert and maintains accessibility for ongoing advice and support to staff and clients.
  • Develops field, analytical, and project management skills in all technical staff.
  • Maintains ongoing knowledge of industry trends and uses that knowledge to determine most effective ways to meet business needs.
  • Actively pursues ongoing learning opportunities to maintain updated knowledge and expertise.
  • It is recognized that those Principals who publish papers in peer reviewed journals, are invited to lecture at technical conferences, and are generally considered to be experts in their field of practice regionally and nationally do not necessarily need to meet each of the “Leadership and Collaboration” and “Business Development” criteria below to become a Principal.

Leadership and Collaboration

  • Assumes final responsibility for the scoping and budgeting of projects, billing, and account collection.
  • Serves as project manager for larger multi-disciplinary and/or multi-location projects.
  • Presents and negotiates contracts with clients.
  • Actively supports the profitable operations of the company through appropriate use of time and designated resources.
  • Encourages open and constructive dialog and interaction with other staff and clients. Clearly and effectively expresses information in written and verbal communications.
  • Consistently reflects the company’s purpose and values, earning the trust and confidence of others and demonstrating loyalty, honesty, and integrity.
  • Demonstrates exceptional project management and client management skills.
  • Positively motivates others toward achievement of common goals. Leads by example and expects excellence. Creates an environment where employees are actively engaged and energized.
  • Recruits and retains competent employees, providing necessary resources, accessibility, and support. Strives to improve overall business performance by leveraging staff capabilities.

Business Development 

  • Collaborates with other senior staff to achieve company-wide goals.
  • Develops and maintains professional licensure in field of practice and participates in external activities and professional associations.
  • Represents the company as a leader in the profession by participating and assuming leadership responsibilities in community, industry, and client-driven events and organizations.
  • Represents the company in all markets and technical disciplines. Speaks to clients about the company’s capabilities and identifies potential projects outside of their area of expertise.
  • May present technical papers and research at conferences and other appropriate venues.
  • May lead proposal processes and collaborate with Marketing staff in proposal development and promotion.
  • Establishes positive working relationships and maintains client confidence to support continuing partnerships.
  • Helps to develop business-development skills in junior staff by introducing them to clients, having them participate in project and business-development meetings, and instilling the principals of “World Class Client Service.”

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • 15 years of related professional experience, including 10 years of project management experience and 3 years successfully leading others on a project and/or direct report basis.
  • Registration/Certification in appropriate technical specialty required.
  • An initial minimum investment level (MIL) in GeoEngineers’ shares as identified in the most recent version of the Shareholder Investment Level Policy (currently 100% of base salary or a plan to get to the MIL within a designated timeline. The plan must be approved by the Stock Transaction Committee.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with individuals at all levels of responsibility.
  • Strong business acumen and ability to translate needs of the business into functional solutions.
  • Outstanding interpersonal, written and verbal communication, and presentation skills, providing capability to successfully advise and influence Company’s management and executive teams.
  • Exceptional ability to build credibility quickly at all levels within the organization.
  • Experience leading high performance, results-driven teams with a focus on customer satisfaction.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Physical Requirements / Work Environment

  • Normal office environment with moderate noise levels, occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs., prolonged sitting and regular walking, bending, standing and reaching.
  • Ability to perform consistent work on a PC with prolonged view of a monitor/screen.
  • Willingness and ability to engage in site visits, at times hiking over strenuous terrain in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to travel locally and long distances to serve clients, perform business development activities, and visit various company offices as necessary.

Our best estimate of the salary range for the Principal Environmental Scientist located in Boston, MA, is $155,200 – $232,800 annually. Compensation offered will be based on a variety of individual factors, including education and experience, as well as internal equity. GeoEngineers’ salary ranges are reviewed and updated each year and employees are eligible for pay increases based on individual performance. As part of our competitive total rewards package, employees in this role may also be eligible for our annual year-end bonus offering, subject to program eligibility requirements.
