Erik Strandhagen

CMS, GISP

Senior Environmental/GIS Data Analyst

I am passionate about organizing, exploring, explaining, and visualizing complex data. My career in data management and GIS allows me to combine these passions. It is satisfying to boil down a big data set and provide analysis that supports informed decision making.

Erik is an experienced environmental data and geographic information systems (GIS) analyst supporting long-term environmental remediation projects—and managing the data they generate. GeoEngineers depends on reliable data and careful analysis to make recommendations to our clients, and Erik helps us get it right.

Erik holds two different national geospatial professional certifications; one from the American Society of Photogrammetry/Remote Sensing as a Certified Map Scientist (CMS), and another from the GIS Certification Institute as a Certified GIS Professional (GISP).

Before joining GeoEngineers, Erik spent more than 21 years managing environmental data and working with geospatial technologies. That includes past and current work for the Portland Harbor Superfund Site. Erik is the data manager for a Portland Harbor interim database and is the lead author of the Portland Harbor Information Management Plan. He specializes in providing GIS and database development and implementation support to a variety of clients.

Erik also specializes in advanced geostatistical analysis to draft 3D subsurface site geologic and contaminant models. EPA consultants and other regulatory agencies have reviewed and validated his subsurface models. He is experienced with GIS-based hydrologic analysis using light-image detection and ranging (LiDAR) elevation data for advanced digital terrain and surface analysis. In addition to GIS, Erik has extensive project-management experience that includes budgeting, tracking costs, scheduling, and coordination with regulators, subcontractors, and other consultants.

When he is not managing or analyzing data in the office, Erik also brings skills and experience to the field to capture high resolution spatial data that is the basis for high accuracy map products. Erik is an FAA-certified remote pilot with more than a hundred hours flying unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). He carefully plans UAS missions to gather data for the preparation of high accuracy orthophotos and digital terrain models for use in CAD, GIS and web map applications.

Erik enjoys getting outside to mountain bike, hike, paddleboard, and snowboard when not at work. He also adores spending time with his daughter traveling, camping, and perfecting their skills in culinary arts.
