James is a staff civil engineer in our Lake Oswego office specializing in trenchless technologies like horizontal directional drilling (HDD). He is often in the field observing specialized trenchless drill rigs, to ensure that the drilling is performed according to design specifications. He works on behalf of our clients to document his observations and compile them into detailed reports to keep projects on track.
Originally drawn to structural engineering, James had an “ah-ha moment” during a graduate geotechnical conference as an undergraduate. The event introduced him to the geotechnical engineering field in a way he had never seen before.
“The people I met and the companies I networked with made me realize how much I could see myself working alongside the geotechnical community,” James reflects.
Before joining GeoEngineers, James worked as an undergraduate research assistant, where he focused on soil lab testing, geotechnical calculations, and groundwater analysis. His decision to join GeoEngineers was largely influenced by the firm’s multidisciplinary approach.
“I was pulled in because of how many different disciplines GeoEngineers has under one roof,” James says. “I enjoy the idea of a multidisciplinary company because it gives you a broader pool of knowledge to draw from.”
What he enjoys most about his role at GeoEngineers is how open the company is to provide learning opportunities that match his interests. Looking to the future, James is passionate about structures such as bridges and tunnels, and he hopes to work closely with or even design these types of structures.
Outside of work, James enjoys reading, particularly fantasy and mystery/thriller books, when he has the time.
