Zack is a staff geotechnical engineer working with the firm’s performance-based engineering and risk assessment team based in the Redmond office. His focus is performing seismic analysis and numerical modeling on soft ground sites, including a 3D modeling project on one of the deepest excavations in New Orleans’ history, the 17th Street Permanent Canal Closures and Pumps (PCCP) project. Zack has enjoyed working on this project because it allowed him to use the most cutting-edge science to tackle a complex problem—constructing a permanent and more sustainable measure for reducing the risk of a 100-year level storm surge entering the outfall canals near the Orleans Parish lakefront.

“I enjoy the fact that engineering interpretation and judgement are vital components of geotechnical work,” Zack says. “Every project is different, with numerous ways to approach each one, and it’s up to the engineer to decide how he wants to solve the problems.”

After spending his days working on complex, highly technical projects, Zack likes to relax and watch movies and TV, or spend time outdoors.
