Meet Blake Martin

CAD design
Site plans for HDD and
other projects

Springfield, MO

Blake became attracted to computer-aided drafting (CAD) when he worked in construction and dealt with blueprints and floor plans. This background and his prior graphic design experience helped him sail through his technical college CAD studies, and then land his first-ever CAD-design job at GeoEngineers.

As a CAD technician, Blake enjoys using software to create site plans and surface data to support engineers and other professionals. “I get paid to do what I love to do. In college, I thought, ‘people actually pay me to do this stuff?’ It's kind of my dream job, actually.”

Blake was also surprised at how much freedom he had to get his feet wet during his first big project, the Gulf South 301 South Pipeline Replacement, which included four Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) crossings. He remarked, “I didn’t think I’d be let loose on a project like that when I first started, so it made me feel good that my supervisor let me run with it.”

In his leisure time, Blake gets in some fishing, hunting and Saturday night poker. He also enjoys undertaking remodeling projects on his family’s home and his friends’ houses. “You don’t necessarily need a set of plans for remodeling, but the way you approach it is similar to how you work in CAD. Life in general is like that: If you fail to plan, then you plan to fail.”
